There truly is nothing like the bond between a child and their first dog. I came across a sweet story that I’d like to share with you about a little girl named Meredith and the love she had for her first dog named Abbey. Now I’m not sure if this story is true or not, but it will warm your heart regardless.
Abbey came into Meredith’s life when she was just a baby. As they both grew, their bond strengthened. Abbey and Meredith became inseparable. Wherever Meredith went, Abbey went too. Their love for each other was like none other.
Father Time eventually caught up with poor little Abbey and Meredith was right by her side when she passed away. Meredith was obviously heartbroken when Abbey passed, however she took comfort in knowing that she was in a better place – able to run and play freely again just like the days of their youth together.
Meredith decided that she would write a letter to someone and make sure that her beloved dog was taken care of and watched over, now that she was no longer able to. The sweet little letter she wrote was written to God himself. Below is what Meredith wrote:
Upon completion of the letter, Meredith inserted it into an envelope along with a picture of Abbey, and then sealed it up. She even put extra postage on it and told her mother that she wanted to make sure that it had enough postage so it would reach Heaven.
With letter mailed, weeks passed and little Meredith was still heartbroken. Then one day her mother brought in a mysterious gold package addressed to Meredith with no return address on it. Although concerned, Meredith’s mother gave it to her and let her open it.
Meredith’s mother watched her daughter open the package and pull a book out. The book was Mr. Roger’s, When a Pet Dies. Meredith opened the book and noticed an inscription written on the inside cover.
Meredith’s mother watched her daughter’s demeanor begin to change as she read what was written. Meredith began to smile like she hadn’t in weeks and her mother finally asked her what the inscription said. Meredith handed the book to her mother as tears streamed down her face.
“Abbey’s okay, mom. She’s with God.” Meredith told her mother. With that, Meredith’s mother began reading the inscription. Below is what the inscription said:
In the hours that followed, Meredith and her mother went through a mix of emotions together. They both laughed and cried as they shared their best memories of their beloved little Abbey. Meredith missed her dog dearly but she felt relieved knowing that her best friend was with God now.
Again, I’m not sure if this story is true or not. It really doesn’t matter though because it’s a beautifully written illustration of the love a young child has for their first pet. I still remember my first dog and still miss her dearly to this day. Like Meredith, I too take comfort in knowing that she is running around freely with Abbey in Heaven.
If this story touched your heart like it did mine, please share with your friends and family. God bless you and all of your departed fur babies.
