The lifestyle you as a dog owner engage your pup in dictates how long and how good your dog’s life will be. A healthy lifestyle is dictated by how much exercise your dog gets, how much food he eats, and the quality of the food he eats.
The amount of food you give your dog should- be regulated. Dog owners should also watch how often they feed their pet as well. More importantly, dog owners should also know the appropriate food to serve their dog. Feeding your dog good quality food in the right amounts, helps your pup avoid health problems down the road.
How much should you feed your dog?
The amount of dog food intake is affected by many factors such as age, activity level and special needs or nutrition. As your dog ages, the amount of food intake also increases. Also, the higher the level of activities and training that your dog engages in, the higher the amount of food that should be ingested.
For a 3-12-pound dog, it is advised to intake 1/3 to 1 cup of dry food. Dogs weighing 13 to 20 pounds should intake 1 to 1 1/3 cups of dry food. For 21- to 25-pound dogs, the recommended intake is 1 1/3 to 2 cups of dry food.
For a 26-50-pound dog, it is advised to intake 2 to 2 2/3 cups of dry food. Dogs weighing 51 to 75 pounds should intake 2 2/3 to 3 1/3 cups of dry food. For 76- to 100-pound dogs, intake should be 1 1/3 to 2 cups of dry food.
For dogs weighing over 100 pounds, it is suggested to have food intake of 4 ¼ cups with an additional ¼ cup for every 10 pounds of weight over 100 pounds.
Dogs should have a complete and balanced meal just like humans. This will help them achieve a healthier and longer life. If you suspect that your dog is experiencing problems or discomfort from the food you’re feeding him; it’s a good idea to consult a veterinarian or an expert to have them design a specific diet for your dog.
How often should your dog be fed?
On the average, dogs should be fed twice each day. Dog owners should prepare dog food once in the morning and once in the evening. It is also suggested that you feed your dogs at the same time in the morning and evening.
However, this feeding schedule does not always work. While this is ideal, in some cases your dog may need to be fed more than twice a day, considering any special needs and his age.
The dog food you feed your pooch needs to be tasty enough that your dog loves to eat it. It doesn’t matter how healthy or balanced it is, or how much you give him, if your dog refuses to consume it then none of the other factors matter.
